So, we lost a good portion of our flock while we were hanging out at the lake. We had someone who was letting them in and out of the coop and checking up on them. However, with us and the dogs being gone, the place was too quiet which apparently was an open invitation to some predator. We were really sad to lose our beautiful Buff Orpington hens as well as a couple of our "babies" from the younger group.
Today, we were able to get some hens from friends to replace our lost ones so that we aren't set back too far from getting eggs. When we arrived home and drove into the yard, we noticed a large hawk sitting on the woodpile eyeing the chicken coop. We scared him off but are pretty sure he is the culprit. It is to be hoped that our presence and that of the dogs will deter him.
Today was also the second slaughter day. (I hate that word, but I don't know how else to phrase it). It went better today than last time thanks to a little more research. Let me be clear, I have no part of it. It is all Court. I am amazed at the kids' interest in the whole process. Last time they watched the whole thing. Today they were less interested (old news already!LOL!) but Augustine and Teresa stood around in the kitchen asking lots of questions while Court was cleaning it up. Katherine and I tend to avoid the area until the chickens look like they just came from Wegman's! :-)
Chicken barbecue for dinner. Tasty, but we are really needing some variety in chicken recipes!
Sorry you lost some Molly. BBQ that fresh sound wonderful!
